English As A Second Language Program Offered

For English Language Learners (ELL)

 

The East Lansing School District offers an English As A Second Language program to

all eligible students whose primary language is one other than English. This is called the English Language Learners (ELL) program.  Eligibility is based on information provided at enrollment by parents, teacher recommendations, and/or test results from the State of Michigan English Language Proficiency Screener (ELPA) test.  The program runs from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

 

The goals for ELL instruction are to help students understand, speak, read, and write English. We attempt to help students acquire English as quickly and fluently as possible. We want our ELL students, within a reasonable period of time, to fully participate in their regular classroom programs and achieve their grade level requirements.  Our ELL program offerings are consolidated to provide a much more efficient pupil-teacher ratio and prevent the loss of valuable instructional time.  The district offers six sites for ELL services.  Wm. Donley, Red Cedar, Glencairn, and Whitehills  are the elementary sites.  Middle school and high school students receive instruction at their respective schools.

 

The following ELL program services are available for students who qualify:

 

1.   All elementary ELL students are taught ELL at one of these four district sites:  Whitehills, Glencairn, Red Cedar or Wm. Donley, depending on grade level and enrollment at those four schools.

2.   All ELL students are transported by district buses from their home school to their ELL building site.  All ELL students are mainstreamed into the appropriate grade level at their ELL program site.

3.   Once an ELL student no longer needs ELL instruction, they have the option of returning to their home school or remaining at their designated ELL program site.

4.   Once students are determined as eligible, parents will receive a notification of services from their child's ELL teacher on the "East Lansing School District Notification of English Language Learner Placement" letter. This is mailed via U.S. Mail to your home.
