Motion for Reconfiguration of the School District
The following motion was presented at the November 12, 2012 meeting of the Board of Education and subsequently tabled until the next meeting. This motion will be placed on the agenda for action at the November 26, 2012 regular meeting of the Board of Education.
The East Lansing Board of Education authorize and direct the following actions to be taken:
1)
That the school district's 6th grade be moved to MacDonald Middle School to form a 6th through 8th grade middle school. The Board's preference would be to utilize the existing pool space for the addition of the majority of the 6th grade facilities if this usage would result in a lower total project cost over other alternatives. Other options will be considered, but the intent will be to implement this project for the lowest cost and with the utilization of existing facilities where possible.
2)
That the following elementary schools be reconfigured to be Kindergarten
through 5th grade elementary schools:
- Donely Elementary School - Glencairn Elementary School - Marble Elementary School - Pinecrest Elementary School - Whitehills Elementary School
3)
That the Red Cedar Elementary School be reconfigured and remodeled to
house:
- Pre-kindergarten and developmental kindergarten classes from across
the district - the district's administration building staff
4)
That the School Board shall conduct an architectural review as soon as possible with the intent to select an architect to implement items 1 - 3 above. Each proposal must include estimated architectural and construction costs for each alternative proposed. The review shall be completed within three months.
5)
That the School Board direct the Director of Finance to solicit bids for construction of items 1 - 3 above, once a specific proposal from the chosen
architect has been approved by the board. The timeline that will be included
in the construction bid for construction completion shall be as soon as
possible, but no later than July 31, 2014 for items 1 - 3 above.
6)
That the District's curriculum staff and School Board investigate and examine the Reggio Emilia school concept for placement at the Red Cedar
school building. This investigation and examination should proceed with the
intent that if the curriculum staff and Board believe this is a viable and
possible offering, that it may be implemented for the 2014 school year.
7)
That the costs for any architectural services and construction for items 1 - 3
above shall be paid from the sinking fund as allowed by law. Any costs
associated with items 1 and 3 above that cannot be paid for from the sinking
fund shall be paid from the 2012 Capital Projects Fund.
