In 1000 words or less, write an essay that answers the following questions:

1) What age do you plan to retire?

2) How much money do you think you will need to have saved prior to retiring?

3) What are some of the key decisions you will make in your life to ensure you can retire at the age you want?

4) What are some of the biggest mistakes people make that hinder their ability to live comfortably in retirement?

6/01/13 > Blavin Scholars Program
Fostering strong outcomes

Paul and Amy Blavin
In 2006, Paul (BBA ’86) and Amy Blavin created a scholarship program bringing foster care students to campus as U-M undergrads. The Arizona-based couple later worked with the Division of Student Affairs to create the Blavin Scholars Program, helping to make the U-M campus, with its extensive resources and 41,000 students, feel like home to the Blavin scholars.

For some Blavin scholars, who at 18 “age out” of foster care, campus is home—their one and only. The Blavin Scholars Program helps these scholars not only access the campus resources that are available to all students, but also overcome obstacles such as where to stay if the dorms close between semesters. This type of support can make the difference between a foster care student who thrives at U-M and one who might not.

The Blavins have now pledged to match, dollar for dollar, a half-million dollars in gifts to the Blavin Scholars Program. “Our philanthropy has focused on providing a solid education for foster kids who are wards of the state,” Paul Blavin has said, “because it is the foundation for a successful future.” If the match succeeds, the million-dollar endowment will provide sustained, annual funding for students from the foster care system.
