What is the price of a student’s meal?

Each year a free and reduced application must be completed. If your student is approved for free or reduced meals, the benefits are applied immediately for breakfast and lunch each day for one school year. Prior to your student’s approval, parents and or guardians are responsible for payment of meals until the application has been approved.

How do I apply for Free or Reduced Lunch?

All of our buildings have a paper copy of the applications that can be picked up and filled out at any time. You can also apply online at the website Your application will be processed once it reaches our office at the high school kitchen. You will receive an e-mail when completed. In addition, we mail out approval letters once a week.

Where are the Menus?

Menus are located at Also, menus are posted in the cafeterias and are sent home once a month with all elementary students.

What is a reimbursable meal?

A reimbursable meal is a “complete meal” according to the guidelines set by the USDA National School Lunch Program. ELPS utilizes the “offer verses serve” format. This means every day at lunch 5 different components of a meal are offered which include: protein, grains, fruits, vegetables and milk. Out of these 5 components, the student must take at least 3 components, 1 of which must be a fruit or a vegetable. They may choose all 5 items, or even 2 fruits or vegetables, as long as the other standards are met. If the “complete meal” requirements are not met, the student will be charged what they selected at full price.

What payment options do you accept?

Cash and checks can be brought to the cafeteria during meal periods or at the front office of any of the schools. The money will be deposited into your student’s account within the next 24 hours, depending on the time of day. You can also deposit money online at Transactions online have a $2.50 fee and can take up to an hour to post to your student’s account. Will my student be denied a meal? What if their account is negative?

No, your student will never be denied a meal. Our cashiers at the middle school and high school are trained to inform your child when their account is negative. We will let them buy a reimbursable meal for 2 days, not snack items, with a negative balance. If your student’s balance has not been paid in full after the 2 charge limit, we will offer a free alternative meal. This will consist of a cheese sandwich, fruit of their choice, vegetable of their choice, and an 8oz milk.

How do I know the balance of my student’s account?

If your email is up to date in the school system, you should receive emails every day once your student’s account is $5.00 or below. Also, parents can always view their student’s meal account anytime for FREE at In addition, all elementary students with balances of $5 and under will receive in their Friday folders a printed statement.

What features are available on

This is a free account that allows parents to access their student’s lunch account. Once you are on the website it will prompt you to make your own account. You will need your student’s ID number that will link your home account to theirs. On this website you can see what they are buying, when their account is charged, set blocks and limits to their spending, check their balance and deposit money.

Do you offer vegetarian meals?

Yes, every day we have meatless meal options for all students. These vary depending on the menu available for the day. Some examples of vegetarian options are a fruit and yogurt parfait, cheese pizza, macaroni and cheese, bean tacos, or French toast. Although we offer different meat and protein options at all lunches, it is not a requirement for a student to take all five components offered to students.

How do I add a block to my students account?

When you make your account on you have the option to add parental blocks. You can add a specific dollar amount for them to spend total each day, set restrictions on a la carte purchases or stop them from buying snacks all together.

If my student receive Free or Reduced meal benefits, what does that include?

Your student will receive one reimbursable meal for breakfast and one reimbursable meal for lunch each day. If your student would like to purchase only a milk, a second entrée, or any extra items in addition to their meal, they must pay the full price as posted in the cafeteria.

Can students use each other’s meal account number?

No, we do not allow anybody to use other student’s meal accounts. We train our cashiers to look at the name and picture, if available, of each account that is brought up. If your child is present, we cannot stop them from purchasing snack or a la carte item for their friends. We will not let your child’s lunch account become negative from a la carte items.

If I have multiple children in the East Lansing School District, can they use each other’s account if one of their meal accounts is negative?

You have the option to transfer funds between your student’s accounts at, if you have made a deposit online. If this is not an option, contact us at the high school kitchen office and we can transfer the money for you. We do not allow students to transfer funds.

If my student has a food allergy, can you accommodate for their needs?

Before we can make any substitutions or accommodate to any allergy or diets, we need to have a copy of the Michigan Department of Education Allergy Form completed by your doctor.

Food Allergy

If your student has a food allergy you will need the MDE allergy form completed by your doctor. The school district will need this on file before making a substitution.
